EXPOSITORY WRITING

An Andersen Education student's hand, writing an expository essay.

If you're concerned about your child's writing skills, you're not alone.

Statistics show that 27% of students in grades 8-12 are proficient in writing. 48% of students who took the ACT didn't meet proficiency in the ACT English section, which tests grammar, writing, and rhetorical strategies.

This is a scary reality of post-pandemic learning loss. We see it in students whether they go to private or public school.

A satisfactory program for our students doesn't exist, so Remy got certified and created her own!

Here's how we do it:

Theresa S., Upper East Side parent

"My 11 grade child was struggling with writing for IB Humanities. Remy taught my daughter strategies to help her achieve A and A+ level scores in just a few months. We have been so pleased with our daughter's results under Remy's guidance, we are now transitioning to SAT prep.

FAQs

What is expository writing and why is it important?
Expository writing is writing that explains or informs. We use expository writing in our academic careers (writing responses, summatives, research papers, and essays) and beyond (reports, briefs, proposals, emails). Research shows that written communication is one of the top five attributes that employers look for when hiring.

What is the Hochman method and how does it work?
The Hochman method starts at the foundational level of writing: the sentence. From there, we build to the paragraph, then multiple paragraphs, and finally, the argument/research paper. Along the way, we address note-taking, summarizing, and revising. Written expression pairs best with reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and content knowledge, so I expect your child to improve in those skills as well. We'll use examples from literature, math, social studies, and science in classwork and homework.

Who is this intensive for?
Program One: Students in 6th-8th grades
Program Two: Students in 9th-12th grades

What can I expect from this intensive and what is expected of my child?
This intensive is 12 hours of instruction with 1 hour of homework per week. Each week, we will focus on a different aspect of writing and use passages from literature, social studies, and math problems to illustrate these concepts and demonstrate mastery. Students are expected to take notes, participate in class, ask questions if they’re confused, and complete their homework. Since writing skills are cumulative, students are expected to show up for the full length of the course.

Why is this intensive on Zoom?
Classes are held on Zoom to provide flexibility to the student and their family (in case of weekend travel). Zoom also allows classes to be recorded in case of an absence.

When will this intensive be available? What is the price?
Class will begin on Saturday, September 7th or Sunday, September 8th and will continue for 12 weeks. Program One (6th-8th grades) will be 9-10am on Saturdays, and Program Two (9th-12th grades) will be 7-8pm on Sundays. The price for each student's enrollment is $600 for the full 12 weeks.
