Allow us to introduce our resident Chemistry, Physics, and Math expert NYC tutor, Steve! Steve can tutor from the elementary all the way to college levels and is available to meet in-person in New York City (specifically the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn)!
Steve's Tutoring Journey
I started professionally tutoring while in college in 2017, connecting with local high school students and tutoring chemistry and physics. However, my tutoring “career” started long before that. I distinctly remember the study groups formed in high school in which we would help each other prepare for big exams. For some subjects I was able to lead the group while others I was
being tutored myself! My early days of peer-to-peer tutoring still guide me today. I find better
success when I am able to connect with the student more as a friend and less as a tutor. I do this
by keeping the lesson casual and finding common interests such as sports, reading, and other
hobbies to talk about and relate concepts to during the lesson.
Steve's Tutoring Specialities: Chemistry, Physics, and Math (all levels) in NYC (and online)
I’ve tutored from the college level all the way down to elementary school. I’ve found success bringing a failing student up to passing as well as helping a highly motivated and successful student get ready for the next step in their academic career.
Steve's Tutoring Philosophy
My tutoring philosophy is that one size does not fit all. I consider each individual when tutoring
and can change my approach based on the student. Some students need to backtrack weeks in the
curriculum to correct poor fundamentals. Some students need more guided repetitions to solidify
a concept they have a fleeting grasp of. Some students might not even need a tutor to pass and I
can use my undergraduate, graduate, and professional lab experience to help prepare them for the
road ahead.
Steve's Typical Tutoring Sessions
Meeting a new student always starts with finding some common ground. Whether it’s a shared
sport, hobby, book, movie, or TV show, I can find something in common with anyone. This helps
me start more of a peer-to-peer relationship and brings comfortability to the tutoring session. A
typical tutoring session may start with a few minutes of casual conversation before catching up
on what the student has been learning in class. The bulk of a tutoring session differs vastly
depending on the student. I always end with a recap of what we went over and what I’d like the
student to work on before our next lesson.
Steve's Passions Outside of Tutoring
Outside of tutoring I love any kind of athletic competition, still finding myself involved in men’s
league softball and basketball every year. I read almost every night and enjoy hiking and
camping. I SCUBA dive at least once a summer and make a trip to the White Mountains of New
Hampshire for skiing every winter.
Steve's Favorite Book of 2024 (so far)
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov!
