Remy Zaken Andersen's Professional Headshot

Hi! I’m Remy and I am a standardized test prep expert who is passionate about increasing my students’ confidence and scores from below 50th percentile to 90th percentile so that they can get into their dream school.

About Me

I have been a professional tutor since 2013, so over 10 years at the time of this inaugural blog post. My journey to test prep is full circle. When I was a kid, I was passionate about acting and singing, so much so that I became a professional actor at age 11. I first started working with a private tutor when I toured the country as The Little Girl in the second National Tour of Ragtime, and absolutely loved the experience. I soared through my homework and was even able to test out of my Spanish course after moving so far ahead in my studies. Once I returned to school, I missed the individual attention and fast pacing of tutoring. It was only once I was able to enroll in AP courses that I felt truly challenged again and was able to reach my full potential. I continued my acting career throughout high school after making a deal with my parents that I would maintain straight A’s. I did this relatively easily, despite being in and out of school, and eventually scored in the 99th percentile on my ACTs while I was rehearsing for Spring Awakening Off-Broadway. When the show moved to Broadway, I had only 1 month of classroom time my senior year and was still able to get 5s on the AP US History and AP Biology exams. I credit this to my self-discipline and to working with passionate and dedicated tutors!

I was accepted to Columbia University while I was on Broadway and majored in Psychology with a Concentration in Social Cognition and Emotion. It was there that I began the research that I use today in my business. I love using a combination of neuroscience and sports psychology to inform how I approach tutoring so that my students work smarter, not harder.

Becoming A Standardized Test Prep Expert

In 2013, I began professionally tutoring as a part time job while I continued to perform in TV shows, films, and theater. My primary focus back then was the ACT and SAT tests since I had recently taken them. I quickly familiarized myself with the SSAT, ISEE, and SHSAT, though, after seeing how much they can shape a student’s academic career. I’ve been fortunate to work with some great companies who’ve offered strong training and good test-taking strategies, but most of my training has been based on my own experience as a student, my in depth analysis of past released tests, and cutting edge research. As my client base continued to grow, I began adding more in-demand courses, such as Chemistry, Physics, and other tests such as the Hunter Test, TACHS, and HSPT. I proudly teach every admissions test from kindergarten to high school and provide academic support in almost every subject as well. Check out the rest of the website for more information and get in touch if you’re interested in beginning your student’s tutoring journey.

I’m passionate about helping students succeed in their academic careers, and this blog will serve as another resource for them. Everyone deserves access to great tutoring and insights on Executive Functioning. I approach tutoring in a holistic way and it shows — while my students prepare for a test or a specific subject, they often see gains in other classes or areas as well.

How Tutoring With Me Works

I will always start with a free phone consultation to make sure I am the right fit for the student. I love to hear about all of the factors that make up a child's profile:

  • academic strengths and areas of improvement

  • learning differences, IEP, 504 plan, or other accommodations (if applicable!)

  • personality traits

  • extracurriculars, hobbies, passions

  • learning style (visual, auditory, read/write, kinesthetic)

  • goals (target scores and schools) and timeline

  • openness to tutoring

  • diagnostic and baseline scores and/or previous homework and tests

  • commitment to outside practice

  • intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation

  • preferred teaching style

Each session’s length and content will vary depending on the student’s needs. No two students working with me will have the same plan or lesson structure, and that’s on purpose! For long tests, I used to tutor for 1.5-2 hours per session, but at this point, a lot of students either do not have the time for this session length in their schedule or cannot maintain focus for that long. That’s okay! We will make it work so that we maximize efficiency.

For standardized test prep, I will create a monthly practice test schedule so I can chart a student's scores and progress.

Every student can improve their scores and their confidence — though that is not solely dependent on my tutoring abilities. Students have to be willing to put in time and effort in between our sessions as well.
