How long have you been a tutor?
I have been a tutor since 2020. I began my tutoring career in 2020, initially supporting elementary school students with math during the challenges of the pandemic. Later, I served as a Writing Specialist at Columbia University, where I worked with first-year Master’s students to help them strengthen their writing skills and improve their career readiness.
What are your tutoring specialties?
Growing up in New York City and attending its public schools shaped who I am today. Having navigated the NYC school system, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful academic mentorship can be in unlocking opportunities. Excelling on standardized tests like the OLSAT, SHSAT, SAT, and ACT opened doors for me—from McAuliffe Middle School to Stuyvesant High School, then New York University, and eventually Columbia University for my Master’s degree. These experiences fuel my passion for guiding students who are facing the same challenges and aspirations.
Beyond test prep, I specialize in English and essay writing across all levels—from elementary through graduate school. My expertise also includes college and graduate admissions essay coaching, journalism writing, and scientific research writing for academic journals. I’m committed to helping students find their unique voice and achieve their academic goals.
What's your tutoring philosophy?
My background in journalism fuels my approach to tutoring. I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and build genuine connections with my students. I believe that open and ongoing communication with parents is essential for student success. By regularly sharing progress updates, discussing goals, and collaborating on strategies, I ensure that families are actively involved in their child’s learning journey. This partnership helps reinforce skills at home and keeps everyone aligned on the path to academic growth. I strive to create a positive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, knowing that learning is a process.
When you meet a new student, how do you make them feel comfortable and engaged with the session?
When welcoming a new student, I focus on building a warm and supportive atmosphere right from the start. I introduce myself and take time to learn about the student's interests and aspirations. I always encourage open dialogue and emphasize that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of the learning process. This helps students feel at ease and fosters a sense of trust from our very first meeting.
Each tutoring session I lead is highly personalized and interactive. I adapt my approach to suit the individual needs of each student, blending educational content with real-life examples and engaging activities to ensure that learning is both effective and enjoyable.
Overall, my sessions are designed to be student-centered, flexible, and empowering, ensuring that each learner feels comfortable, engaged, and motivated to reach their goals.
What's a recent success story you can share with us?
In today’s competitive job market, I had the opportunity to mentor two graduate students throughout their job search journeys. I provided guidance with crafting effective resumes and cover letters, and offered strategic advice on how to present themselves confidently during interviews. As a result of our collaboration, both students received multiple job offers by the end of their search cycles.
What was your greatest tutoring challenge and how did you overcome it?
A particularly meaningful challenge I faced as a tutor was supporting an ESL student at Columbia University who found it difficult to participate in class discussions because of subject difficulty and low self-confidence. To help, I tailored my approach to the student’s needs, offered consistent encouragement, and fostered a welcoming space for them to practice speaking English, specifically within the context of the science subject. Gradually, the student began sharing her ideas more freely. This experience reinforced the value of patience, adaptability, and trust-building in education, and deepened my dedication to helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.
What are your passions outside of tutoring and how do they help you be a better tutor?
Outside of tutoring, my passions include photography, reading, and exploring new cities.
Photography has helped me develop a keen eye for detail and patience, which are essential when understanding each student’s unique needs and tailoring my explanations to suit them.
Reading broadens my knowledge, enabling me to connect with students through diverse topics.
Exploring new cities fuels my curiosity and openness to new experiences, qualities that help me stay adaptable and creative in finding effective ways to support each learner's growth.
What's your favorite book you've read in 2025 so far?
This year, my favorite read has been Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. The book unfolds as a puzzle, with the protagonist and the reader uncovering truths about the world and themselves together. I found the slow unveiling of secrets to be fascinating and thought-provoking.
How do you keep up with the evolution of the tutoring industry?
I review official updates from major testing organizations (such as the College Board, ACT, and others) to stay informed about changes in test formats, content, and scoring. By keeping track of any changes in test formats, content, or scoring policies, I ensure that my tutoring resources and approaches are always current and effective.
Additionally, I’m actively involved in educator forums dedicated to test preparation and best practices in education. Engaging with other professionals helps me exchange insights and anticipate upcoming shifts in standardized testing.
Why is remote tutoring better than in-person tutoring?
Online tutoring offers flexible, convenient learning from anywhere, allowing students to connect with expert tutors without travel or disruption. By removing geographical and transportation barriers, it makes quality education accessible to all. Plus, students can learn at their own pace and on their own schedule, maximizing time efficiency.
What's your favorite part about being on the Andersen Education team?
My favorite part about being on the Andersen Education team is being part of a community of expert tutors who receive continuous support. This collaborative environment helps me teach more effectively and inspires my ongoing professional growth.
